(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 31, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- SingaporeÂ’s Gardens By the Bay was awarded the World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival 2012.
Paul Finch, festival coordinator said, "In a globalized environment, there is so much interest in how we deal with density and this combination of urbanism with a garden that is both an attraction and nature is a wonderful solution."
Sainsbury Laboratory in Cambridge won the 2012 RIBA Stirling Prize based upon some of the same concepts as the Gardens By the Bay. The Sainsbury Laboratory is a new plant science institute to advance the research of plant development. It features hi-tech laboratories, meeting rooms, and public spaces within CambridgeÂ’s botanical gardens.
Directors Alan Stanton and Paul Williams were presented with a nearly $40,000 prize. The design that won the award was described as “a timeless piece of architecture, taken from an extraordinary degree of sophistication and beauty.”
"It is testament to the skill, experience and imagination of Stanton Williams architects that they have found a creative solution to this complex project. The low-rise building with its grand, colonnaded facade cleverly integrates itself with the surrounding botanical gardens and it is no surprise that the new public cafe has proved to be extremely popular."
The building even boasts energy-saving designs, including a rainwater collection system from the room to irrigation tanks that provide water for the gardens.
Lord Sainsbury said: "I am delighted that Stanton Williams has won the RIBA Stirling Prize for the Sainsbury Laboratory, in competition with some outstanding buildings. I am also very proud to be associated with their inspiring building which sets a new standard for laboratory design and blends in beautifully with the historic Botanic Gardens."
The RIBA Stirling Prize is awarded for architecture based in Europe and buildings designed or built in Britain. The London Olympic Stadium on Stratford, east London was also nominated.
